Estimate only

This calculator provides mathematical estimates for general informational purposes only and does not constitute legal, financial or investment advice. The appropriate discount rate, methodology and application may depend on the facts, claim type, jurisdiction and applicable law. Results should be independently verified before being relied upon in a claim, settlement, mediation, hearing or legal proceeding. Use of this calculator does not create an attorney-client relationship.

Assumptions

What the math does

  • One future payment: PV = FV / (1 + r)n
  • Annual payment stream: PV = PMT × [1 − (1 + r)−n] / r, with payments at the end of each year. If the rate is 0%, PV = PMT × n.
  • r is the annual discount rate as a decimal; n is the number of years or annual payments. Results are shown to the cent.
  • Amounts are not adjusted for inflation, taxes or mortality.

Scope

What it does not do

This tool performs present-value mathematics. It does not determine whether a particular claim, payment, damage category or legal matter should be discounted, and it should not be applied automatically to noneconomic damages or other categories. It is not a workers’ compensation legal rule.

O.C.G.A. § 51-12-13 also addresses evidence concerning the cost of specific private investment products, including annuities. This calculator uses mathematical present-value formulas; it does not provide annuity quotes or investment-product pricing.
